Buttercream is an icing that is made with butter. There are several types of buttercream, but today we will be focusing on American Buttercream. In my baking, I use American buttercream more than any other type of buttercream. It is great on cupcakes, as cake fillings and on the outside of cakes. American buttercream is the best choice for cake decorating because it is sturdy enough to pipe out designs. It is also the sweetest of buttercreams, so if you are looking for a less sweet option American Buttercream may not be what you are looking for. If you need a visual of the buttercream process, you can watch my video HERE!
Here is what you will need:
1 cup Salted Butter
1 cup Vegetable Shortening
2lbs or 8 cups Confectioners/Powdered Sugar
Milk or Water for thinning
1 tsp Vanilla
In a stand mixer or with a handheld mixer, cream butter and shortening together.
*You can use all butter or all shortening. All butter will leave a less stable frosting. It will melt a lot easier. An all shortening frosting will be whiter in color but may have a greasier feel in the mouth.
Once the butter and shortening are well mixed, start to add the powdered sugar. I like to add half of the sugar at a time. Mix well then add the second half. Your frosting should be thick.
Add vanilla and mix
Depending on what you are using your icing for, you may or may not want to thin it out a little. If you need the icing to be a little smoother, add a little milk or water and mix. Do this slowly. Only about a half teaspoon at a time!
And there you go! American Buttercream!
Once your buttercream is done, you can also color it with food coloring!
